Career Development Resources for Counselors, Teachers, Advisors

  1. 6-12 Career Planning Strategy Table. This is a table of the tools we utilized in an online career development course. It's in table form, with the assessment tool and a box to check which grade it is most useful for (if used at all). Feel free to download it and begin to sort out what works for you. You may use it as a template to build a career development strategy and schedule for your district.

  2. Career Development Continuum. This is a nice, neat, concise summary - with a visual model - of a concept that some of you brought up at last week's class, that of the Career Development Continuum, which begins with Career Awareness in the early grades, progresses to Career Exploration in the middle and later grades, and then on to Career Preparation. There is obviously some overlap in these areas. The 2nd page of this document gives the nice visual. Great for looking at the "big picture" when you're developing that K-12 district career development plan!

  3. AKCIS Roadmap. Here is a listing of all the AKCIS assignments and worksheets by section. You can use it to guide your students to the correct section in their portfolio.

  4. AKCIS Junior Roadmap. Here is a listing of all the AKCIS Jr. assignments and worksheets by section. You can use it to guide your students to the correct section in their portfolio.

  5. Estimate your WorkKeys Level Score from the TERC practice tests. The practice WorkKeys tests on the TERC site do not generate a "level" score. This table will give you a rough idea of what your WorkKeys level score would be, based on how many questions you answered correctly on the practice. Remember - these are APPROXIMATIONS only!!

  6. Career Planning Template. This is a template that can be used to develop your own specific career development strategy

  13. AKCIS Admin Tools PowerPoint. This is the powerpoint that shows screenshots of the various AKCIS Administration tools.

  14. Show Me the Money. Here's a PowerPoint going over the main funding sources for postsecondary education. It was originally designed for high school students. Feel free to use it if it works for you.

  15. TERC presentation. This is the powerpoint used by the State Library for presentations on TERC.

  16. Vocational Information Center. A website with hundreds of links to cool resources.

  17. Can you Live on Minimum Wage? This is an article from the MSN Careers website. It gives the minimum hourly wage for each state and then translates that into the annual wage. Quite the eye-opener!

  18. State Career Planning Initiatives  -- The Education Commission of the States has compiled info from the various states, that deal with career, academic, and/or life planning initiatives. Their website gives links to the state websites for you to get more information. No guarantees as to how timely and accurate this is.

  19. America's Career Resource Network. This is a great site with lots of career guidance tools. You'll note the links for Students, Parents, Counselors, Teachers, and Administrators at the left and the Career Development link at the top. Check out the "Career Decision-Making Tool" link at the bottom right. It offers a guide to the various stages of career decision-making, with activities and suggestions for each stage.

  20. AKCIS Newsletter Jan. 2009.  The latest and greatest from AKCIS!

  21. World of Work Website. If you haven't used ACT's World of Work map, you can check it out here. It's a great tool to bring together a lot of career exploration ideas (RIASEC, career areas, etc.). Notice there's a Counselor version of the map and a student version.

  22. World of Work Map -"unofficial" version - from Oklahoma's CTE office. A nice one-page visual.

  23. AVTEC Newsletter-April 2009. If you aren't on the mailing list, you may want to look at AVTEC's latest newsletter!

  24. Career Development PowerPoint. PowerPoint presentation on Career Development Strategies so you can see the big picture.

  25. Southeast Island School District Career Guidance Website.  Deedee Jeffreys and Amy McDonald have generously shared their website. They are developing this website to use with their Careers and Portfolios classes. Looks like they've done a great job of putting all the resources out there for their teachers and students. Thanks!

  26. Oklahoma Career Cluster Activities. This is a FREE reproducible PDF document that contains student activites related to career clusters, published by the state of Oklahoma.

  27. WIN Career K-8 Career Lessons. FREE reproducible PDF files! Hundreds of ready-made grade-appropriate lessons, each one based on a career area and a WorkKeys skill.

  28. AKCIS Financial Aid Search. This short powerpoint shows how you may use AKCIS to find financial aid opportunities such as scholarships, grants, and loans based on various characteristics such as level of study (undergrad or graduate), ethnicity, personal characteristics, organizational affiliation, application deadline, and others.

  29. AKCIS School Compare. This short powerpoint shows how you may use AKCIS to compare up to 3 schools at a time, on well over a dozen characteristics such as costs, financial aid, housing, programs of study, etc. Schools include apprenticeship programs, career-technical schools, private and public schools, short-term training programs, etc.
